Target students

The programme will appeal to a broad range of clinicians, scientists and those in related biopharmaceutical, policy and healthcare sectors. The Certificate in Translational Medicine will provide important advanced training for the next generation of medical and basic scientists.

Delivery methods

It will be delivered via the internet using an innovative blend of online learning opportunities supported by the University’s award winning online learning environments. The programme is designed in such a way that, with access to a computer with an internet connection, that the student will be able to study it at the times and in the places which suits he/she best. Most of the programme work will involve independent study, reflection and online discussion with peers and academic tutors which the student can post to at any time.

There will be a three day on-site introductory session in Edinburgh at the start of the course in late September. This will be an opportunity to meet colleagues and course leaders as well as visiting biomedical and clinical centres to see Translational Medicine in action.

Start date, duration and workload

The certificate will commence in late September of each year and takes one academic year to complete. The programme follows a 2 semester timetable:

Semester 1  September - December
Semester 2  January - April

Students will study for around 10-15 hours per week during the semester. This is likely to vary with your level of experience. Study time is spread between online activities, discussion, private study, resource exploration and assessment.

Prerequisite qualifications

In general applicants should be honours degree or medical degree holders from an approved University. Candidates with clinical, industrial and other relevant experience will also be considered. Applicants must also meet the University of Edinburgh’s minimum English Language requirements.
