Just because we can - A Workshop on Ethics in Assisted Reproduction

Toronto, Canada
May 29, 2008

Technological advances in the field of infertility treatment have been implemented over the last few decades without the necessary time for consideration of their ethical implications. The moment has definitely come for a gathering of professional stakeholders including physicians, nurses, embryologists, counsellors, lawyers, ethicists, and administrative staff who work in infertility, and who deal on a daily basis with some of the most daunting ethical dilemmas faced in medicine today. This conference is designed to highlight some of the most challenging scenarios and to discuss and attempt to resolve, within an ethical framework, some of the conflicts that have arisen between our capacity to deliver treatment and our professional obligation to do so.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the conclusion of the workshop, participants will have

  • expanded their knowledge of ethical modes of thinking as they pertain to technological advances and infertility treatment;
  • increased awareness and stimulated further debate on the myriad ethical dilemmas that arise daily at infertility clinics; and
  • initiated a thoughtful self-examination of the personal biases they bring to decision-making when faced with ethically challenging situations in ART
