This program was designed to improve the working knowledge and competence of neurologists, psychologists, and psychiatrists interested in the care of Multiple Sclerosis patients. Presentations raised awareness of the cognitive and affective disorders observed in Multiple Sclerosis.
Through a balanced program of lectures and interactive discussion, a solid understanding of the pathology, pathophysiology, therapeutic development and testing, and available management options in Multiple Sclerosis complications was provided. Opportunity for interaction and questions comprised a significant amount of program time.
OBJECTIVES
At the conclusion of this course the participant was able to:
- Describe current thinking regarding disease pathophysiology of mental problems in MS;
- Define the psychometric tests to diagnose cognitive impairment and to follow its evolution;
- Diagnose and treat mood disorders so frequently observed in MS;
- Evaluate the effects on cognition and affectivity of various disase modifying therapies;
- Identify the psychosocial aspects of MS;
- Describe the quality of life issues related to MS;
- Define the role of rehabilitation in MS.
CME accreditation for this program has been applied for from the Royal College of Physicians, London, UK.
The Cognitive and Psychiatric Disorders in MS is accredited by the European Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (EACCME) to provide the following CME activity for medical specialists. The EACCME is an institution of the European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS). www.uems.be.
The Cognitive and Psychiatric Disorders in MS is deisgnated for a maximum of 18 hours of European external CME credits. Each medical specialist should claim only those hours of credit that he/she actually spent in the educational activity.
EACCME credits are recognized as Physician's Recognition Award by the American Medical Association.
