Learning about
Long-Term Challenges of HAART

Barcelona, Spain
July 6, 2002

This symposium presented vital information about the potentially beneficial effects of recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) in improving outcome, adherence, and quality of life in patients with HIV/AIDS. Emerging data previewed the pathophysiology of HIV/AIDS adipose redistribution syndrome (HARS), HIV-associated wasting and lipodystrophy. Available data on the use of rhGH in HARS and HIV-associated wasting was discussed, as was the effect of rhGH on immune reconstitution in patients with HIV/AIDS.

OBJECTIVES

At the conclusion of the conference, the participant was able to:

  • Understand the patient's concerns about wasting and lipodystrophy in the HAART era
  • Understand growth hormone dynamics in HIV-related lipodystrophy.
  • Identify the effects of growth hormone therapy on immune function in HIV-1 infected adults.
  • Evaluate the role of Growth Hormone in lipodystrophy and HIV-associated wasting.
  • Describe the pathophysiology and treatment of HIV-associated wasting in the era of HAART.
