The goals of the symposium "Is aging a disease?" were:
- to explain the biological, endocrinological and metabolic aspects of aging and its clinical consequences;
- to discuss the management of the growth hormone decline associated with aging in the perspective of a review of clinical trials undertaken with the use of GH, GHRH, Secretagogues and IGF-1;
- to discuss the diagnostic aspects of aging and to propose therapeutic guidelines for GH replacement.
OBJECTIVES
At the conclusion of this program, the participant was able to:
- Describe the biology, the endocrine system and metabolic changes associated with aging.
- Review the clinical aspects of aging and to understand the clinical consequences of aging.
- Understand the rationale for GH replacement in aging and to explain current research and clinical investigations related mainly to the use of GH, GHRH (together with secretagogues and IGF-1) in aging.
- Review the diagnostic aspects of aging, the indications and contraindications to GH replacement in aging and to propose therapy guidelines for GH replacement therapy in aging.
