Biography

Prof. Annamaria Colao is Associate Professor of Endocrinology and Chief of the Neuroendocrine Unit at the Department of Molecular and Clinical Endocrinology and Oncology, “Federico II” University of Naples.

Born in Naples, September 4th 1958, married with one daughter, she obtained her degree in Medicine in 1983, a post-graduate fellow in Endocrinology in 1986 and a PhD in Endocrinology and Metabolism in 1993. From 1990 she has been senior doctor at the Department of Molecular and Clinical Endocrinology and Oncology of the “Federico II” University of Naples, passing on to be Associate Professor of Endocrinology in 2002 and Head of the Neuroendocrine Unit in 2003.

Furthermore, Prof. Colao has been member of the Teaching Commission of the Italian Society of Endocrinology since 1997; member of the Editorial Board of the “Journal of Endocrinological Investigation” since 1999; editor of the “Neuroendocrinology” area of the Italian journal “L’Endocrinologo” since 2000; Continental Editor of Clinical Endocrinology and member of the Editorial Board of the journal “Growth Hormone and IGFI Research” since 2002.

From 1987 to 1990 Prof. Colao was researcher at the laboratory of of Experimental Medicine INSERM U297, University di Aix II-Marseille chaired by Charles Oliver. She has also been visiting Professor 1997 and 1999 at the Department of Internal Medicine, University of Rotterdam chaired by Steven W.J. Lamberts; in 2000 at the Department of Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases, University of Buenos Aires, chaired by prof. Rosa Artese; in 2002 at the Department of Neurosurgery and Endocrinology/Metabolic Diseases, University of Charlottesville, chaired by Prof. Ed Laws Jr.; in 2002 at the Department of Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases, John Hopkins Hospital Baltimore, chaired by Prof. Paul Ladenson; in 2002 at the Department of Neurosurgery and Endocrinology, University of Sao Paulo, Brazil, chaired by Prof. Marcelo Bronstein.

Awards: June 1997 "Fondazione Piergiorgio Chiodini" award in recognition of her results in the field of Neuroendocrinology; June International "HypoCCS" award as best under 40th researcher in Neuroendocrinology; June 2003 Endocrine Society International first prize for excellence in published clinical research in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism.

She is author of more than 200 publications in peer reviewed journals with an impact factor of more than 600.
