Biography

Professor Andrew Y. Finlay is Professor of Dermatology and Head of the Department of Dermatology at the University of Wales College of Medicine in Cardiff, Wales. Previously, Professor Finlay was a Research Fellow in Dermatology in Glasgow, Scotland and a Consultant Dermatologist and Honorary Senior Lecturer in Dermatology at the University of Wales College of Medicine, before assuming his present position as Head of the Department of Dermatology.

Professor Finlay is a member of numerous professional societies. He served as President of the British Association of Dermatologists from 2000-2001 and Treasurer from 1992-1995, he was Chairman of Royal College of Physicians Joint Committee on Dermatology from 2001-2003. He was UK representative for dermatology at the Union of European Medical Specialties Dermatology Committee. Additionally, he is an honorary member of the Norwegian Dermatological Society and the Primary Care Dermatology Society. He was invited to give the Dowling Oration in 2000 and has been invited to give the annual Hebra Lecture at the Austrian Society of Dermatology in November 2003.

Professor Finlay's major research interest has been the development of techniques to measure disability caused by skin disease. The techniques he developed to measure Quality of Life in psoriasis, eczema, and acne are now recognized and utilized internationally.

Professor Finlay has responsibility for a major postgraduate and undergraduate dermatology teaching programme. He created the Diploma in Practical Dermatology distance learning programme, which is now delivered on a newly developed Managed Learning Environmnet website and is currently being taken by 240 general practitioners worldwide.

Professor Finlay is the author of more than 200 publications, including numerous original research and review articles, clinical reports, book chapters, and published letters. In addition, he has co-authored over 120 published meeting abstracts. He was the founding co-editor of the Journal of Dermatological Treatment.
